Latest Blog Update:Station Cleaning Day!!

Station Cleaning Day!!

We had a great day Saturday cleaning and organizing the station in preparation for installation of our new equipment, network, and super goodies (We’re thinking of a web-cam in the cabin, would that be cool?)

I snapped a couple pictures while working, and thought I’d post them here.

Radio Tierra receives a grant from the Oregon Community Foundation!

Radio Tierra KZAS 95.1 receives $18,400 grant

Radio Tierra, a local Hood River community radio station, recently was awarded an $18,400 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation. Anne Key, a Radio Tierra DJ and fundraiser, said the grant will be used to update broadcasting equipment that the station needs to increase broadcast quality.  KZAS Radio Tierra broadcasts on 95.1 in Hood River, 95.9 in Stevenson, and 107.7 in The Dalles. The grant will be used to purchase servers, computers, microphones, and other broadcasting equipment.

“This grant will allow us to buy equipment that will not only update the sound quality of the station but will also make it possible to expand our community based broadcasts to include more guest DJ’s” says Key.“Though we have great community support to cover the basic costs like electricity and licensing, we needed capital investment to upgrade our equipment.  We are grateful that Oregon Community Foundation believes in Radio Tierra, helping us to serve the Gorge area, delivering a high quality broadcast.”

The mission of the Oregon Community Foundation is to improve life in Oregon and promote effective philanthropy. OCF works with individuals, families, businesses and organizations to create charitable funds to support the community causes they care about. Through these funds OCF awards more than $60 million annually in grants and scholarships. The Foundation makes grants through an application process that involves local citizens in the review and evaluation of requests for funds. Application materials are available through the foundation’s Portland office. Individuals or businesses interested in establishing a fun may contact the Portland office at 1221 SW Yamhill, Suite 100, Portland OR 97205, 503.227.6846.

We’ve been hacked!

The Radio Tierra site had some hack SPAM comments today that actually brought down the site, and all other sites on this server. I’ve deleted the comments– which were injecting some code to call other sites– and gotten things back up and running. Hopefully, the steps that I’ve taken to remove comment ability will hold things secure. I’ve removed the ability of people to add accounts, and turned off comments, but I may need everyone to update their passwords if it happens again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hey, Is this thing on?

Things are pretty crazy here backstage at Radio Tierra. Everyone’s got their own jobs and projects and they work hard enough at those, let alone busting their rumps to do things like create grant applications, network design and great programming. It’s amazing that it all comes together, yet somehow it seems to.

Recently, we changed our domain back to RadioTierra.org and the site’s accented characters all broke- but they got fixed nearly immediately (and I didn’t even know!). The individual pages about scheduling, contacts, etc. were similarly down, but they’re up again, and stable.

And the best part, our stellar DJs are now beginning to open their blogs. Sacred Earth and Celtic Earth both have blogs and more are coming (including That Dusty Blog, once I get a chance to get it back again).

All of this couldn’t happen without the incredible work of Los Voluntários, and that means that you can be a part of it. If you’d like to start a show on Radio Tierra, or help out in other ways, contact us (but be patient, please. All of us are part-time volunteers, so we’re often working on something of a different timescale than people are used to).

Domain, database and diacritics

I’ve changed the domain of the website to radiotierra.org so we can begin using that address officially instead of kzas.org. Unfortunately, when I did this, I had to rebuild the database, and the character set was lost during the rebuild. What this means is that all of our posts are now screwed up because the accents and diacritics on the letters were munged. Completely my fault, and I apologize, but if everyone could take the time to update what they can and make sure the accents are fixed, it would be appreciated. Search and replace should work for this, so if you have a word like “intersección” in a post, and realize that the “ó” part is actually a “ó”, you can search/replace on the whole page, rather than changing individually.

Again, I’m really sorry about the trouble. The good news is that our domain is now officially radiotierra.org (I’ll change emails soon). The bad news is that I messed up the characters.

Status of The New Site

Hello all, we’re just about done with the new site. We still need to get complete descriptions of all the shows, and fill out the biographies of everyone, but our mission statement and new schedule are online (yay!).

It’s been a long road, but we’re nearly there. Here are some things we need in the future:

  • Pictures and Bios of all board members and DJs
  • Translations of all pages that are only in one language (send the translation to me if you can’t put it into the page yourself)
  • Complete description of all of the programs- especially those that have live DJs!

If anyone needs an account to edit the pages, let me know and I’ll get one to you rapido! Also, let me know if you need anything else, or if we need to add other functionality!

Ciao!
