Radio Tierra premier live remote broadcast, The Mayors’ Independence Eve celebration, originating at the Bingen Theater proved to be a huge success on July 3, 2016. Twenty- four sponsors provided funds for the broadcast.
The evening, led by hosts Humberto Calderon and Leti Valle recognized the contributions of Minn Yasui whose life work was dedicated to overturning racism and who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama.
Mayor Paul Blackburn of Hood River, Mayor of Bingen Betty Barnes, and White Salmon’s Mayor David Poucher welcomed the live studio audience and those listening at home. Musical performances were the highlight of the evening artist included Harmony of the Gorge, Arturo Leyva, Tim Mayer, The Mayor and Antipaz, Los Temerosos de Juan Antonio, Weiler & Tindall the Fathas of Convention, Midnight Gypsies all who gathered on stage for a rousing conclusion of “This Land is Your Land.” Poetry readings were performed by Ken McCarty, Cassandra Medley and Deborah Langlois with original poetry works by White Salmon Fourth Graders Juliet, Leah, Danica along with a special appearance of Sam Hill as portrayed by Tom Burns. This original program was written by Kathy Williams and produced by Gary Young.
